My Connection to BB&N: Alex Blake ’93

Alex Blake ’93 recounts her favorite memories from her days at BB&N and reflects upon her connection to BB&N as she looks ahead to her 15th Reunion coming up in June.

What I’ve done since BB&N…
After BB&N I went to the George Washington University in DC and graduated with a degree in Finance, much to the surprise of almost everyone I know ("really? She was good at math? Huh!"). From there I went into Investor Relations, first at NASDAQ and then for an Irish-American company which involved lots of travel. I then took a year off to go live the high life in Barcelona, Spain. Now I'm back in Boston and have just opened my own real estate business, which is basically like first grade all over again - lots of new things to learn, a little anxiety, and plenty of interesting new people to meet. But, unlike first grade, the money is much better.

Why I reconnected with BB&N…
I entered BB&N in kindergarten and graduated from 12th grade - I'm a lifer! That means something to me and it's fair to say that there has always been a connection. Plus, it's nice to keep up with the friends who I met when I was 7.

What I’ve done to stay connected…
I am still good friends with fellow BB&N'ers. However, the truth is I joined the reunion committee because I saw that Janet Costello ’93 was on the list!

Facebook has been a great tool to reconnect with people who you haven't talked to since Art class and it's a medium that is not scary at all...

Why I like being connected…
We are a very smart, interesting group of people. And I think it's excellent to see what amazing things the people from my class and other classes are doing with their lives...it's really incredible.

Faculty members that I’m excited to see at Strawberry Night…
I'm excited to see Jesse Sarzana and Ethan Rossiter (both ’93)...seriously? That's funny they’re now faculty! I would LOVE to sit in on those classes. I would probably get sent to the principal’s office though. A lot.

General memories of the School…
A few years ago when I was applying for a job, they had called my references before having me come in for an interview. I wasn't worried because I was pretty sure that my references alone would be able to land me the job, one of those references was Kari Jorgenson ’93. The question from the prospective employer was, "How long have you known Alex?" "Over 25 years." was Kari's accurate answer. Then, realizing that they might have some age bias thinking I was elderly, she quickly added, "We met in Kindergarten!!" I got that job, thanks Kari!

I think that we had a particularly special class – I have some great memories of having parties in Third Grade - Mr. Sopper needs an award (after his class Kari and I were rarely in the same class again...), the BB&N Circus where you can have your name written in 16 different languages in calligraphy (does Simple Modern Hand count as a foreign language?). And it's really amazing that we are all still alive after high school – come on, learning to drive on Gerry's Landing Road? And finally, what other school teaches (May) pole dancing in 5th grade? Awesome!!

Looking forward to seeing many old and new faces at Strawberry Night and Reunion Weekend!
