Why Moose Heads Have Flat Antlers

If you've been up late nights wondering why moose have huge, flat antlers, droopy chins, and enormous feet, you can have those burning questions answered by reading Susan (Sus) Williams Beckhorn's (Buckingham '71) fifth book for children, Moose Eggs, or Why Moose Have Flat Antlers (Down East Books 2007, beautifully illustrated by Maine artist, Helen Stevens). Sus recently did a book signing at L.L. Bean's Freeport store where she brought a real moose antler for kids to see and touch, plus a genuine moose egg (guaranteed real by Moose’s friend Grouse—although sadly a dud) so that they could judge for themselves whether or not moose calves might really hatch out of eggs. None of the kids were fooled, but several adults were!

Susan Williams Beckhorn is the author of two other Down East Books, In the Morning of the World, Six Woodland Why Stories, original pour quoi myths about northeast wildlife; and Sarey by Lantern Light, the story of a girl with dyslexia whose experiences in Maine’s potato country (including a thrilling encounter with a moose!) help her to accept the challenge of her disability. Susan’s middle grade novel, The Kingfisher’s Gift (Philomel 2002), a turn-of the-century fairiy story which takes place in Wayland, MA (and partly in Cambridge) was a Junior Library Guild selection and IRA honor book, and her YA novel, Wind Rider (Laura Geringer/Harper Collins 2006), the story of how the first horse might have been tamed and ridden 6000 years ago, received starred reviews from Kliatt and Booklist, was a BookSense Pick, and was named to the ALA’s Amelia Bloomer List for literature which promotes equality for women.

At the moment, Sus has two middle grade novels out for consideration and is trying to get an agent, while she works on manuscripts for a chapter book about an invisible pony (probably the best kind to have) and a new moose picture book (illustrated by herself), all while trying to promote her work so that she might someday actually make money at this business!
