Dying Out West

Lloyd Guptill ’60 and his fascination with the American West began while he was still in college at Harvard. During those years, he had the opportunity to visit friends at college all over the country. His experiences, as well as the people he encountered on his journeys, have greatly inspired Guptill’s latest novel, Dying Out West.

Dying Out West is the story of artist Haley Van Fleet and her voyage west with a fellow artist. The two embark on an adventure that revolves around their photography of places tourists never see, places that are often very dangerous. When Haley takes illegal pictures on a military missile range, the two find themselves running from those who wish to put an end to their artistic expression. Haley soon has no choice but to fight back against those who are tracking her every move.

For as long as he can remember, Lloyd Guptill loved to write. Over the years he has supported his writing habit working as a cab driver, a travel writer, and a housepainter. When he is not writing, Lloyd can often be found painting western landscapes, much like the heroine in his new book. In fact, the character of Haley is based upon a woman he only glimpsed for a few seconds while wandering around Seattle.

Lloyd and his wife Bonnie currently live along the New England coastline. Lloyd and Bonnie are the founding members of Habitat for Cats, a Massachusetts corporation that helps to rescue hundreds of homeless cats. Habitat for Cats is dedicated to helping abandoned cats through adoption and health support. Lloyd believes that an animal you save will always delight and he has devoted much of his time to this special cause.
